READ OUR TOP TIPS FOR HELPING YOUR FLOWERS LOOK BEAUTIFUL FOR LONGER!
It's so disappointing when you get a beautiful bouquet of flowers and they start wilting as soon as you put them proudly on display. If this has happened to you - take a look at our top five tips for keeping your blooms looking beautiful for longer...
1
CUT STEMS AT ANGLE
Cut flowers ‘drink’ through their stems - specifically the ‘xylem’ (the part of the stem that carries water and nutrients up to the flower). Once picked, the flower stem starts to dry out and seal off. So it’s important to trim the stems of all your flowers with a pair of sharp scissors, before you put them in a clean vase. Be sure to cut them diagonally at a 45° angle - this increases the surface area of the stem, enabling the flower to ‘drink’ more water.
2
REMOVE LEAVES AT WATER LEVEL
Any leaves under water will quickly begin to rot and cause a build up of bacteria which clogs the stem ends - preventing the uptake of water as well as causing the water to smell!
3
FEED THEM
Make your own flower food - simply mix 400ml warm tap water, 1 table spoon of sugar, 1 desert spoon of vinegar and a few drops of bleach. The sugar nourishes the flowers and promotes blooms, the vinegar and bleach prevent the growth of bacteria and prevent the water becoming cloudy.
4
CHANGE THE WATER REGULARLY
Not only do flowers drink a lot of water - a large arrangement can go through a vase of water in a couple of days - but changing the existing water helps keep it clean and bacteria free. Ideally re-trim the ends of the stems each time you change the water.
5
PLACE THEM OUT OF DIRECT SUNLIGHT
Flowers don’t always want a sunny spot - once they have opened, this is their peak and sun and heat will only cause them to wilt faster. Instead - keep them in a cool, dark spot to keep them fresh for longer. You could also try to keep them away from ripening fruit like bananas and apples - as they give off an invisible hormone which induces flowers to drop their petals and become fruit!
