If, like us, you have curious little people and inquisitive pets, you may want to consider choosing non-toxic houseplants.

This may not have been something you’ve thought about before but some common houseplants such as pothos and philodendrons can be quite toxic for humans and animals so here are our top non-toxic choices. Although, these plants are generally considered ‘safe’ for children and animals we still wouldn’t recommend taking a nibble so it is always best to keep plants away from very young children and animals.

1

KENTIA PALM

This is absolutely top of our list as not only is it non toxic but it is easy to care (tolerant of a fair amount of neglect) and is also one of the best plants for improving air quality.

2

BOSTON FERN

A great choice for the bathroom – totally safe for pets and children, these ferns love moist soil and can tolerate most light conditions. Ferns also absolutely love being misted so give your kids a spray bottle and let them go wild!

3

PEPEROMIA

There’s such a fantastic variety of peperomia – we are particular fans of the watermelon peperomia and the ripple peperomia – they are all non-toxic and great plants for most rooms in the house. They’re very rewarding as can be easily propagated so if you’re introducing young children to caring for plants, peperomias are a great place to start! Be careful of overwatering as it is hard to rescue a peperomia from root rot so err on the side of underwatering!

PRAYER PLANT

These are great plants for the family home, brilliantly impactful and easy to care for but non-toxic. Prayer plants love bright (but indirect) light and although not needy they will thrive with regular misting.

5

SPIDER PLANT

Another great choice, the spider plant is non- toxic and will tolerate most light conditions including low light (although it will thrive in bright indirect sunlight) Avoid putting the spider plant in direct sunlight as the leaves are easily scorched. Spider plants also love humidity so benefit from regular misting.

Having invested in a load of non-toxic plants, you probably still won't be that happy if your pet or child eats them. We advise keeping plants out of reach wherever possible. You can buy various motion-sensor deterrents if your pet is a persistent plant eater or try spraying diluted lemon juice on the leaves to dissuade them!
